If possible, before the procedure, inform all members of your family about what lies ahead so they have time to say goodbye. Here are some ideas you may want to consider for your pet:

Gather special treats, toys, blankets, and your pet’s favorite items to have them nearby.
The main goal for in-home euthanasia is to keep your pet’s comfort in mind for a serene and painless experience.
We pay special attention to your pet’s specific needs, and always keep their comfort in mind. Our goal is to provide your pet a peaceful, painless experience.
The In-Home Euthanasia Process
The first step is coming to terms with your pet’s condition. To aid in the decision making process, please call Pawprints Veterinary Housecall, and Dr. Aimee Ratzlaff will gladly answer any questions you may have. During this conversation, you can become more familiar with the steps we take to provide a peaceful experience for you and your pet, and discuss the aftercare options available to you.
If you decide to move forward with in-home euthanasia, we’ll can arrange a day that’s best for everyone. On that day, the doctor arrives at your home and spends time with you and your pet. They’ll describe the procedure and answer any other questions you may have.
You’ll be with your companion throughout the entire process, helping them feel calm and comforted. Choose a comfortable place to relax with your pet, and when you are ready, the doctor will inject a medication that alleviates any pain or stress they may be experiencing. This medication generally takes 5-10 minutes to take effect, a time you can be with them and offer lots of love and reassurance. Once the medication takes effect, your pet will be comfortable and nearly asleep. At this time, we’ll check in with you before administering the euthanasia medication, which is simply a large dose of an anesthetic. This medication is completely painless and takes effect within a few minutes. Your pet will not experience any discomfort or anxiety. (Note that the doctor may have to shave a small patch of hair on your pet’s leg in order to effectively find a prominent vein prior to the injection.) The doctor then listens with a stethoscope to confirm your pet has passed.
We’ll handle your pet’s remains in accordance with your request, and inform your regular veterinarian of your pet’s passing. If at any point throughout the procedure you would like additional time or have any special requests, please let the doctor know and she will do her best to honor them. The goal is to help your pet’s passing be as peaceful as possible.
